Roughly fifty vehicles have been marked with what appears to be human blood in the German city of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Vehicles, walls and mailboxes were vandalized, in some cases with swastikas, they reported in a statement.
Officers report they were notified during the night on Wednesday evening, when a resident noticed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued liquid.
The liquid had been drawn in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they reported.
Officers then found many other vandalized cars and residential walls in the nearby vicinity.
Nazi symbols are prohibited in Germany under regulations outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Law enforcement report preliminary tests suggest the substance was likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; officials are currently not aware of any injuries in association with the occurrence," they stated.
City officials announced they were working "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the community for details.
A high-ranking representative said the incident rendered him stunned and needed to be solved promptly.
"This act strikes at the center of Hanau and reopens the pain of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he stated on social media, mentioning the killing of nine people by a gunman aiming at people of foreign heritage in 2020.
