Tragedy Hits as Young Cricket Player Passes Away in Australian City Following Impact by Ball

An Australian young sportsman has lost his life after being struck by a cricket delivery during a practice session in Melbourne.
The teenage player was training in cricket nets in the Melbourne suburb on the weekday when he was hit in the upper body by a ball from an mechanical bowler. It's believed he was using a helmet at the time of the incident.
Emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 17:00 local time and the young man was transported to the children's medical facility in critical condition. He was put on medical support systems but died on Wednesday.
Local Response and Support
The boy's local cricket club expressed they were "completely heartbroken" by the "tragic passing" of one of their team members and that the youngster's death "will be felt by all in our cricket community".
"I understand how heavily this information will impact across our local area and we will provide every possible support we can to our teams and sports community," said the community sports leader.
In a social media post, the young man's sports team offered their condolences to his family and close companions and "to all of those who knew him and the happiness that he provided".
"We request you to please respect the privacy of the family during this difficult time," the message added.
Safety Concerns in Cricket
This tragedy happens just over a decade after a previous national player passed away after being hit on the neck by a ball while playing in a national tournament.
That previous tragedy, for which authorities ultimately found no-one was to blame, sparked enhancements to protective gear for those participating in the game.
