The United Kingdom, United Nations, and European Union Denounce a ‘Gross Injustice’ of Jimmy Lai’s Lengthy Imprisonment.
The court decision of pro-democracy activist Jimmy Lai, a British national Jimmy Lai to 20 years in prison in Hong Kong has sparked international condemnation. Human rights organizations and multiple governments have called the security-related charges influenced by political considerations.
Widespread Disapproval and Appeals for Liberation
Britain's top diplomat Yvette Cooper stated that the two-decade sentence is effectively a prison term lasting the rest of his natural life. She described the prosecution as politically motivated via a statute intended to muzzle Beijing's detractors. She urged Hong Kong's authorities to end his ordeal and release him to his family.
“This outcome illustrates how the vague and overly broad provisions of Hong Kong’s national security legislation may be enforced in contravention of international human rights obligations,” said top UN human rights official Volker Türk.
A European bloc official, Anitta Hipper, remarked that Brussels “condemns” the conclusion of the judicial process and demanded his swift liberation without preconditions.
Background of the Case
Jimmy Lai, the founder of the now-shuttered activist publication, was detained following the enactment of a disputed security legislation in Hong Kong. The law was introduced by Chinese authorities following months of pro-democracy protests backed by Lai's media outlet.
He was ultimately convicted on charges including plotting to create inflammatory publications and conspiracy to collude with foreign forces. The collusion allegations were based on the disputed legislation.
Family Concerns
Lai’s son, Sebastien, conveyed that his father is afraid of passing away in isolation separated from his loved ones. Lai's defense lawyers labeled him the “world’s highest profile political prisoner” behind bars at present.
Sebastien Lai noted that while the verdict was anticipated, its reality was harsher than imagined, though it brought some “respite” that the court process had concluded.
Political Repercussions
The verdict has cast a shadow over the bilateral relationship. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he discussed Lai’s case in talks with China's leader Xi Jinping earlier this year. Nevertheless, visible progress towards his release is not known.
Sebastien Lai queried the point of a visa-free travel agreement between the UK and China, remarking it felt “rather incongruous.”
Government Reactions
In contrast, the Hong Kong and Chinese authorities welcomed the court's decision. Hong Kong’s Chief Executive John Lee stated the sentence manifested that “law and order is maintained.”
The mouthpiece of China’s foreign ministry, Lin Jian, called Lai the “primary instigator” behind previous protests and stated the legal case had been “justified and legal.” He advised international actors to refrain from intervention in the nation's domestic matters.
A Symbolic Case
Media freedom advocates labeled Lai as a figure representing declining journalistic independence in Hong Kong. Their director general said it was a “dark day for those who cherish a free press.”
Boasting a close to 100% rate of guilty verdicts on national security offences, Lai’s lengthy term is seen as the most severe yet imposed under the disputed law.
