The City of Seattle's LGBTQ+ Pride to Proceed During FIFA Tournament In Spite of Formal Protests from Egypt and Iran

Plans for Pride-focused celebrations throughout the city amid next summer’s World Cup will continue as scheduled, even after Iranian and Egyptian soccer associations raised objections about a scheduled “Pride Match.”

Stadium Policy and City Celebrations

Seattle's planning committee have confirmed they are “proceeding as planned” with Pride activities in the city center. This coincides with the tournament group fixture featuring Iran and Egypt on June 26th. Additionally, the tournament's governing body will permit rainbow flags inside the match venue.

“In our role as hosts, SeattleFWC26’s primary task is to get the city ready to welcome visitors for the matches and oversee the fan activities outside of the match venue,” stated a committee representative.

Cultural Background Behind the Formal Complaints

Same-sex relations are criminalized under Iranian law, while in Egypt, public decency statutes are frequently employed to prosecute individuals from the LGBTQ+ community. Egypt's football association stated it refused to be linked to celebrations that “fundamentally oppose the social, religious and cultural values … in Islamic and Arab societies.” Similarly, Iran’s football federation publicly registered “objections against the issue.”

FIFA's Stance on Flags and Banners

Fifa maintains full authority of stadiums during games. While it prohibits banners and flags with overtly political content, it allows flags expressing “social and sporting symbols,” a category which includes the rainbow flag. This policy was in effect at the most recent World Cup in Qatar and was reaffirmed following reports of flags being seized.

  • The Pride Match was an idea created to showcase Seattle’s longstanding tradition of advocating for inclusion and equality.
  • An artistic competition is underway to produce artwork to commemorate the event.
  • Planners are committed to ensuring every visitor feel welcome in the city throughout the tournament.

The region hosts one of the nation’s largest communities of Iranian descent, a vibrant Egyptian expatriate community, and rich communities from every competing country. “Our commitment is to guaranteeing everyone experience the warmth, respect and dignity that characterizes our part of the country,” the statement concluded.
