Preparations for Putin-Trump Meeting Postponed Shortly Following Budapest Talks Suggested

Currently exist "no arrangements" for American leader President Trump to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin "in the near term", a White House official has declared.

This past week the US president said he and the Russian president would conduct negotiations in Budapest within two weeks to address the war in Ukraine.

A planning session between America's top diplomat Marco Rubio and his opposite number Sergei Lavrov was planned for this week - but the White House stated the two had had a "positive" discussion and that a face-to-face session was no longer "necessary".

The administration withheld any more details on why the talks had been postponed.

Previous Developments

The US president had raised the possibility of a Budapest summit over the phone with the Russian leader, a day before hosting Ukrainian President President Zelensky in the White House.

Some reports claimed his talks with the Ukrainian leader had been a "heated exchange", with those familiar claiming Trump had pushed him to give up large areas of eastern Ukraine as part of a settlement with Russia.

However, on Monday the American president supported a truce plan endorsed by Ukraine and EU officials to halt the conflict on the present positions.

"Freeze the lines where it stands," he said.

Moscow has frequently resisted against pausing the current line of contact.

The Russian government was exclusively seeking "enduring stability", Russia's foreign minister said on Tuesday, implying that freezing the front line would only amount to a short-term truce.

Negotiating Stances

The "underlying reasons" of the hostilities required resolution, the Russian diplomat stated, using Kremlin shorthand for a range of comprehensive conditions that encompass the acknowledgment of full Russian sovereignty over the Donbas as well as the demilitarisation of the country – a non-starter for Kyiv and its European partners.

Zelensky commented conversations concerning the front line were the "beginning of diplomacy" but that Russia was "employing all tactics" to avoid diplomacy.

He further commented the exclusive issue that could make Moscow "pay attention" was that of the supply of extended-range arms to Ukraine.

Strategic Factors

The Russian president's spontaneous discussion with Trump recently preceded rumors that the US was considering delivering distance-capable weapons to Ukrainian forces that could theoretically target deep into Russia.

The Ukrainian leader said it was the Tomahawks issue that had compelled Moscow to engage in discussion. The discussion regarding the weapons systems had emerged as a "strong investment" in diplomacy", he remarked.
