Pat Cummins Expected to Feature a Key Part in the Ashes

The Australian skipper has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an impressive average.

The Australian chief selector the selector has declared that skipper Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming England-Australia contest.

Speculation had been growing that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a ongoing back issue that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the extended contest set to start on the 21st of November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about his chances of taking part.

"It's clear that the clock is ticking and various factors around that, not just the back issue, but additional elements," the selector added.

"The outlook is good. [We are] really confident that he's going to play a major part. Hopefully from the opening match. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."

Past Concerns

The captain missed the white-ball matches against New Zealand and India in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lower back issue.

He has a history of spinal problems, with setbacks in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss several home seasons in a limited period.

The bowler mentioned he would be proactive in his approach in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his recovery but admitted it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

Versatile player Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their limited-overs matches against India as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and stated that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "in a good place to deliver overs."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the starting games regardless. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for another day, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
