Nepal's Electoral Scene Witnesses Major Alliance Formed Between Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a notable development ahead of the upcoming national polls, two high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the wake of widespread and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and ultimately led to the ouster of the incumbent government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have officially vowed to prioritize the issues highlighted by the new generation. This promise follows the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which led to considerable casualties.

"Agreement must not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.

The late summer uprising was sparked by public frustration over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This incident served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent accusations of deep-rooted political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal pact, the positions for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old TV host, he founded the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the country's older political leadership. He has in the past held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a key player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the caretaker government that took over after the ousted administration was removed.

Broader Political Discussions Taking Place

In a related development, the current interim prime minister over the weekend held consultations with a number of leading political leaders. These talks involved former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the period of the uprising.

Following these discussions, the prime minister took to social media to emphasize that conducting a free and fair election is a collective duty. The message affirmed the government's commitment to guaranteeing a secure and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
