Gavin Newsom Acknowledges He Is Weighing a White House Bid in 2028

Gavin Newsom, a well-known member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he plans to determine whether to run for president in 2028 once the 2026 midterm elections are over.

"Absolutely, I couldn't be truthful if I denied it," the governor stated when pressed about seriously considering a White House bid after the 2026 midterms. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I can't do that."

The governor's current term as California's leader ends in the start of 2027, and term limits prevent another run. But, he emphasized that any choice is a long way off.

"The future will decide," he added.

Increased Visibility as a Administration Opponent

He has come to the forefront as a high-profile adversary of the former president's team, leveraging his online platforms and championing a ballot measure that would boost the party's House seats in as a counter to Republican redistricting efforts. This strategy has drawn criticism from political opponents.

Clash on Transportation

Donald Trump's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, accused that the governor shows no concern about the state's residents in a weekend appearance on Fox News. Duffy revealed intentions to withhold taxpayer dollars from the state and threatened revoking the state's ability to grant commercial driver's licenses.

"I intend to cut $160m from California," Duffy said, following a this week's tragic collision in California involving an undocumented trucker that led to fatalities and four injuries.

Newsom's office pointed out that the U.S. government had renewed the driver's employment on several occasions, which permitted him to secure a commercial driver's license under federal law.

The transportation secretary had before indicated he was withholding $40m from California for not enforcing language proficiency rules for CDL holders.

Strong Response from the Governor's Office

"Former D-list reality star, now Secretary of Transportation, continues to misunderstand federal law," Newsom's office said in a recent statement addressing Duffy's threats. "Meanwhile, as opposed to this individual, we focus on reality: California truck drivers had a fatal crash rate much lower than the U.S. average. The state of Texas – the sole state with additional licensed drivers – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Facts don't lie. The Trump administration does."

Polling Data and Political Future

A this month's survey found that a majority of the party and 48% of all registered voters indicated that the governor should run for president in 2028. In recent years, Newsom's favorability has risen to an typical level of a third from approximately 30%, while his unfavorability has decreased from an mean of more than 40% to under 40%.

In previous months, Newsom commented while visiting several key regions that he had "no clue" about his future for the next presidential election.

He noted his past difficulties, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the early childhood.

"The idea that a guy who had modest test scores, who continues to find reading challenging, who was often seated at the back – the fact that this is even suggested is, alone, amazing," he commented. "No one can say? I'm looking forward to who steps forward in the next election and who meets that moment. And that is the issue for the U.S. citizens."
