The distinctive yellow-fronted residential building visible behind helped us locate the video.
We are checking video footage and photographs shared this morning that show the scene of a alleged vehicle-borne explosive explosion that Russian officials say fatally injured a senior military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed of his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing.
Our starting point to verify the location from which the pictures were from was based on posts saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on Google Maps and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building captured in the footage.
Locating other buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the pictures were taken.
We also checked that the video clips were new and that the images had not undergone digital alteration.
