Federal Reserve Lowers Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The United States central bank reduced interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year amid economic turbulence originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes

In a announcement, the Fed said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Price increases has risen and stays moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Policy Decisions

The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, such as the number of employment gains created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a relatively bleak overview of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown

Though BLS was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head Jerome Powell said recently, which he had previously attributed stems from immigration and tariff policies.

Price Data Shows Moderate Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Prices rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
